Working in Paraguayan Real Estate

One of the most important things to know before you consider investing in Paraguayan real estate is that anyone can be a real estate agent in Paraguay. That's right, literally anyone. Paraguay is one of the few countries in the world with no pre-requisites before serving as an intermediary in real estate transactions. No classes, no exam, no continuing education, no professional standards: anyone can wake up tomorrow and call themselves a real estate agent.

This means that while there are many professional agents out there working independently or with major brands, there are also many people that have no business working in the industry, and one should be careful when choosing a real estate agent in Paraguay. The basic level of education and professionalism that has been a cornerstone of real estate agents and brokers in the United States for over 100 years is optional in this market.

So what makes me and my office any different?

First, I am a licensed attorney in more than one jurisdiction, and I am also a licensed real estate broker in Massachusetts. What difference does that make for someone buying property in Paraguay? It means that while educated in a different market, I still have certified base line knowledge of the law and real estate transactions that helps me navigate the local market. It also means that I have sworn oaths that demand I hold myself to a higher standard than might otherwise be required. I speak three languages fluently and can converse in several others. Also, I know how to read and interpret the law, contracts, and other documents.

Additionally, I consider it part of my job to share my knowledge and training with the agents in my office. I believe in constant learning and self-improvement, and I expect agents in my office to do things professionally, legally, honestly, and in service to others.

Lastly, I, myself, am an international investor in Paraguay. From knowing next-to-nothing about the country to owning 5 properties and running a business in it, I have made Paraguay my home. I know the risks of doing business here, and I trust in the excellent opportunities in the market.
